This suggestion by Halimah has sparkled off many debates among the Singaporeans. The government reported that they were in the support of this suggestion and will be considering it. The government also wished that the domestic workers have their basic rights and dignity, which includes limit to hours of work, a minimum wage and a decent place to stay in. In a recent Yahoo poll, 46% of the people who voted voted against the implementing of this law.

Hiring a maid at home is for her to help you do your household chores and to maybe take care of the elderly and the babies in the house. Usually, when you hire a maid, it is for you to ease your timetable so that it wont be so filled that you have no time to have any leisure. If the law is implemented, the maids will not be working for one day, and one of the working parents has to stay at home to do the household chores. Having a day off from your work is for you to relax and enjoy yourself, if you still have to do the chores during your leisure time, it will defeat the purpose of having a maid.
Furthermore, some of the most crucial reasons for the low fertility rate in Singapore is due to the fact that couples do not want to be tight down by their family and lose out much of their free time and the cost of it. So by implementing this law of giving the maid a free day off, it will further aggravate the problem of the low fertility rate. Having a day off for the full-time maids will only deter the couples more from having children as hiring part-time maids to work for that 4 to 5 days a month will once again be costly.
Therefore, I think that the best solution to this problem is to just make this a guideline and ensures that the employers of maids have RESPONSIBILITY. Being responsible for their doings will ensure them that they take good care of the maids and do not tire them out, providing them with regular meals and a decent place to sleep in.
